LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY

Over time, my definition of leadership has shifted from something that looks good to something that feels good. My definition has changed as I have changed in my leadership style. The more exposure I have to different leaders and different contexts, the broader my definition becomes. Leadership is empowering others to work hard, strive towards their passion, or lead others. However, leadership is also being supportive of whoever has their turn at the front of the group.

My perspective on the term has shifted from LEADership to leaderSHIP. The -ship suffix typically indicates a status, quality, or profession. The ‘constant state’ and ‘lasting’ elements of the suffix are now what resonate with me the most because I believe a leader leads all the time.

In the last couple years, I have realized that many effective leaders embody these principles without fitting a certain mold. Moreover, I have learned in many ways that my definition of leadership, and the qualities required for effective leadership, are different from those of any other person. Examples of leadership in my eyes are now rooted in people and community, and are less shallow than my previous understanding.  Ultimately, I believe leadership is being in the trenches and requires being authentic, kind, and ethical.
